State Flags

We can help you find US state and US territory flags that meet all official specifications and boast precise colors, designs and proportions. All of Valley Forge’s state flags are proudly Made in America using domestic materials and domestic labor. The company offers indoor state flags, outdoor state flags as well as handheld state flags for parades and celebrations.

Modern U.S. state flags date back to the 1890s, when states wanted to display distinctive symbols at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Most U.S. state flags were designed and adopted between 1893 and World War I, though some like Georgia’s state flag have undergone design changes in recent years.

The state flag should always be displayed in conjunction with the US flag and here are some guidelines for displaying your state flag:

The state flag should hang directly below the U.S. flag when they’re both displayed together on the same staff. Use a state flag that’s of equal size or smaller than the U.S. flag. If, for example, you are lying a 4′ X 6′ American Flag, your state flag should be 3′ X 5′.

Display your state flag to the right of the U.S. flag when the U.S. flag and state flag are on two separate poles. Make sure that the two flagpoles are of equal height. US flags generally have an eagle topper on the poles they are flown from and state flag generally use a ball topper or a different kind of flagpole ornament.

A state flag should be displayed to the audience’s right of a stage when a speech is occurring, a podium is at center and a U.S. flag is at left. Keep in mind that the state flag can also go to the audience’s left of stage and podium if no U.S. flag is there. Always keep the U.S. flag to the left of the stage otherwise.

Carry your state flag to the observer’s right of the U.S. flag during processions such as parades or funerals. Move the state flag just to the observer’s left of the U.S. flag if the U.S. flag is being carried in the front of a line during a similar processional event.

Lower the state flag to just below the U.S. flag when both are next to each other and at half-staff during a time of mourning.

The North American Vexillological Association did a survey a few years ago to poll Americans about the best and worst state flags. Among the best: New Mexico’s State Flag; the Texas State Flag, Maryland’s State Flag, Alaska’s State Flag and the Arizona State Flag. Among the state flags voted as having the worst designs were: the Minnesota State Flag; South Dakota’s State Flag; the Kansas State Flag, the Montana State Flag and Nebraska’s State Flag.

The best selling state flag at AmericanFlags.com is the Texas State Flag.
